Animals in Disaster

Animals in Disaster

Flood and Landslide 2024
The disastrous floods and landslides had hit various places of Nepal on September 27th and 28th which resulted into a devastating condition. The destruction is unimaginable. Roads have vanished beneath flowing waters, highways are blocked by heavy landslides, and even homes in the city have been submerged, affecting numerous lives leading to 244 deaths.

Thousands of animals have been displaced from their homes-animals living on the streets, pets left behind, dogs, cats, farmed animals left behind, more.  Sneha’s Care stepped up to get these animals to safety. The animals were stuck in the swamp and mud leftover from the landslides, making them difficult to rescue. Despite all the risk, our team found a way to rescue the stranded animals. Some of the animals were swept away during the floods and have been injured and need vet care & we provided them with required  treatment.

We have provided treatment to over 160 injured animals,  23 were rescued and sheltered for further care. In order to prevent potential disease outbreaks, we safely managed and disposed of the remains of 153 animals, following to strict safety protocols. Additionally, we distributed relief aid to support 1,024 flood affected animals. Altogether, our efforts have assisted animals across eight different wards of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City.

The Jajarkot Earthquake 2023

Jajarkot is a rural village in the Karnali province and has a population of 189,360, as per census 2021. 81.6% of people relied on agriculture as their source of economy. The night of 3rd Nov, 2023 turned out to be a nightmare to the residents living in Jajarkot. A magnitude of 6.4 hit the Ramidanda as its epicenter and several aftershocks were experienced for a week. According to the Nepal Red Cross Society report, 158 human casualties were reported along with the increasing number of severely injured individuals reaching 345. Around 38,705 families had been affected with the complete/ partial destruction of 28769 houses. It has also been reported that more than 800 animals died and approximately 1500 animals were injured due to the earthquake in Jajarkot.

Our organization organized a relief aid program to meet the targets set by Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action, specifically target 13.1, which aims to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries. In response to the earthquake and its aftershocks, our organization reached various locations in Jajarkot, such as Barekot and Nalgad.

The district administration office at Jajarkot, the Provincial Government, Vet Offices, and the local vet officers of Nalgad rural municipality were the main agencies coordinated for the emergency relief. The government of Nepal has endorsed a one door policy for the relief distribution and without permission and authority from the district administration office it was not possible to distribute the relief materials directly to the beneficiaries. With this coordination, we were able to extend our helping hand to more than 373 affected households and animals in need. The relief aid materials included food items like rice, salt, jaggery, and chokers, as well as essential items like tarpaulins and medicines for both animals and humans.

Our response to devastating flood in Bara and Parsa District of Nepal

In April 2019, a massive storm wreaked havoc on the southern districts of Bara and Parsa, Nepal. With a rising death toll surpassing 50 and hundreds injured, the human cost of the disaster was immense. However, amidst the tragedy, countless animals were left astray, suffering injuries, displacement, and starvation.

We refused to stand by as animals perished. Our team of dedicated veterinarians, technicians, and support staff mobilized so quickly, reaching the affected areas within days. We deployed to villages like Bharwaliya, Bhaluwahi, Benauli, Telgain, Purainya, Hardiya, Kalaiya, and Chainpur, ground zero for the animal crisis. Our Emergency response for the disaster situation was, with grace we were able to treat over 50 injured animals, providing them with critical medical care and distribute food, salt and other medications which amounting to $10,000 for all sick and injured animals. Our efforts were conducted in close collaboration with the Livestock Department of the Government of Nepal, fostering a unified response with the government body. We will continue to work tirelessly to alleviate animal suffering in the wake of natural disasters.
